Steilacoom Historical School District Families,
On behalf of our Board of Directors, teachers, administrators, and support staff, I would like to welcome you to the 2018-19 school year. We recognize the importance of enhancing students’ social-emotional skill development as we work to promote and foster safe, supportive and inclusive learning environments. Since social-emotional and cognitive development are interdependent, our district continues to partner with families to support students’ development of each social-emotional learning standard: self-awareness, self-management, self-efficacy, social awareness, social management and social engagement.
Steilacoom Historical School District’s 2018-2019 focus on RESILIENCY is intended to promote student mental health and well-being, which impacts both readiness to learn and the ability to benefit from learning opportunities. In today’s world, it is essential we help children develop skills to cope, recover from adversity, and be prepared for challenges. Resilience is impacted by both internal and external factors, but resiliency skills are much easier to acquire when a person has developed close ties to the people around them. Schools have a responsibility to help students feel a sense of security and support. This important element to promoting resiliency is called school connectedness.
School connectedness is the belief by students that their peers and adults in the school care about their learning and about them as individuals. The four elements of school connectedness are: adult support, belonging to a positive peer group, commitment to education, and a positive school environment. Research has shown that students are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors and succeed academically when they feel connected to school.
We hope to continue the conversation about social and emotional learning and building resiliency skills as we work to positively impact our children’s healthy and positive development. Our district excels because of the unwavering support from our families and community. Thank you for partnering with our team to create the best education for every student!Sincerely,Kathi Weight, EdD, Superintendent
