Impact Aid Surveys

SHSD families, it's that time of year again! Time to complete the Impact Aid survey!

It is important the district receives one completed form for every student, including our Running Start and Skills Center students - whether or not their parents/guardians live or work on federal property - because each completed form generates revenue for the district.

Completing the survey is easy - Simply complete the form in the ParentSquare post you received from your child's school on November 3.

SHSD School Board Designated a Board of Distinction by WSSDA

We are pleased to announce that the Steilacoom Historical School District School Board has been designated a Board of Distinction by the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA). The SHSD Board also received this honor in 2021, 2022, and 2024.

The Boards of Distinction program is an evidence-based program that screens applicants based on rigorous criteria. To receive recognition, applicants must demonstrate how they fostered successful student outcomes in their district by providing compelling evidence, proving a positive impact on closing opportunity gaps for their students.

WSSDA leadership were particularly impressed with the board's proactive, data-driven focus on reducing opportunity and achievement gaps. The board was recognized for making excellent progress through “data snapshot” sessions, School Improvement Plan visits, embedding board professional learning as a standing agenda item, and other interventions.

Board members will be honored for their achievement at WSSDA’s 2025 Annual Conference in November.

SHS Celebrates AP Capstone Diploma Recipients

At Steilacoom High School (SHS), 5 students have earned the AP Capstone DiplomaTM, and 9 students have earned the AP Seminar and Research CertificateTM during the 2024-25 school year. The AP Capstone Diploma program helps students develop critical thinking, research, collaboration, and presentation skills that are essential to academic and career success.

“Our AP Capstone students have demonstrated remarkable curiosity, perseverance, and scholarship,” said SHS Principal Jake Tyrrell. “With expert guidance from our teachers, they have explored real-world issues and produced research that reflects both intellectual depth and personal passion. These experiences will continue to empower them well beyond high school.”

To earn the AP Capstone Diploma, students must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar, AP Research, and on four additional Advanced Placement® (AP®) Exams of their choice. To receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate, students must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research.

During the 2024-25 school year, more than 160,000 students in over 3,500 schools worldwide participated in AP Capstone. Of these, approximately 27,650 students earned the AP Capstone Diploma, and 12,430 students earned the AP Seminar and Research Certificate.

AP Seminar and AP Research assessments are project-based and evaluate skills mastery through group projects, presentations, and individual essays completed throughout the year. AP Seminar and AP Research are interdisciplinary. Students are encouraged to create research projects based on topics of personal interest and are assessed on the critical thinking, research, collaboration, time management, and presentation skills needed to complete their projects.

Of the students who participated in the AP Capstone Diploma program at Steilacoom High School:

  • Five were awarded the AP Capstone Diploma by earning scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar, AP Research, and on 4 additional AP Exams. They are Laura Bahrt, Chloe Bowden, Eva Clapp, Graham Nobles, and Margaret Stuart.

  • Nine were awarded the AP Seminar and Research Certificate by earning scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research. They are Matt Abelita, Hannah Basford, Joseph Cruz, Olivia Drake, Maya Flynn, Devin Jourdan, Samantha Ramirez, Maya Reber-Avila, and Alexx Skelton.

The College Board AP Program gives students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school. Earning a score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam has multiple benefits for students, including earning college credit, advanced placement in college courses, or both, saving them time and money. Research shows AP students are better prepared for and more likely to enroll and remain in college, do well in classes, and earn their degrees on time. Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP Exams align with their high standards.

In partnership with the higher education community, College Board developed AP Capstone courses to help students build and master skills essential for success in college and career.

SHSD Accepted as MSEP Partner

Steilacoom Historical School District is proud to announce our acceptance as a recognized partner with the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP), a key initiative of the U.S. Department of Defense. MSEP is part of the Department of Defense’s broader Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) program, which aims to reduce the unemployment rate among military spouses and close the wage gap with their civilian counterparts. Over 340,000 military spouses have obtained employment with MSEP employers since the program's inception in 2011.

As the first Washington state school district accepted as an MSEP partner, we join an exclusive group of over 850 employers and nonprofit organizations who have dedicated themselves to recruiting, hiring, promoting, and retaining military spouses in careers that can adapt to the mobile lifestyle required by military service. This partnership will enable us to access a talented and dedicated workforce, while also supporting the financial stability and career aspirations of military families.

This important partnership reinforces our district's commitment to supporting our military families and the communities we serve!

SHSD Receives Purple Star Award

The Steilacoom Historical School District was one of the leaders to advocate for the 2023 legislation to establish the Purple Star Award Program in our state.  The Purple Star Award Program was created to recognize school districts that have incorporated military-friendly practices and demonstrate a commitment to military-connected students and families.

To receive the award, school districts must successfully address the educational, social, and emotional barriers that students may experience when their parents/guardians are deployed or when relocating and transferring to a different school. School districts must also demonstrate a commitment to military-connected families and students by providing students with the tools and supports needed for success in their education and in their futures.

Steilacoom Historical School District (SHSD) is one of 12 school districts across Washington to earn the Purple Star Award in 2024. The district will retain the designation for two years.

“We are honored to be partnering with OSPI to recognize the dedication and hard work of the districts awarded the 2024 Purple Star Award,” said Joel Aune, Executive Director of WASA. “These districts exemplify a commitment to supporting the unique educational needs of military-connected students in Washington state. By fostering environments that address the unique social, emotional, and academic challenges these students face, the Purple Star Districts are ensuring their students are poised for a successful school experience. We commend these districts for their effort and focus on these students and their families.”

SHSD is proud to support our military-connected families throughout the year, with a special focus during the month of April. The Steilacoom Historical School District Board of Directors recently passed Resolution 919-03-20-24 declaring April the Month of the Military Child. The district, in conjunction with community partners, has planned an exciting month of celebrations designed to bring all our military and civilian families together for fun-filled activities and resource sharing. The district’s most anticipated April event is SteillyCon, held on April 24, from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. at Pioneer Middle School. SHSD welcomes the community to dress up as their favorite hero or character and join us for a night of games, resources, STEAM activities, local superheroes and first responders, dinner, and more!
