Transition to Kindergarten Program

TK at SHSD

2026-27 School Year: Application

Due to the recent $27 million legislative cut in Transition to Kindergarten funding, the SHSD will offer a single, district-wide Transition to Kindergarten (TK) program for the 2026-27 school year serving eligible students from both Cherrydale Primary and Chloe Clark Elementary school.  Because of the limited classroom space at Cherrydale Primary School, the mainland TK program will take place at Chloe Clark Elementary School and be capped at 20 students.  The district will continue to provide a TK program at Anderson Island Elementary.

Please see "Revised Program Screening Process for 2026-27 School Year" information in the Frequently Asked Questions on this page. Because space is limited, not all applicants will be selected

Transition to Kindergarten is an early learning program for children who do not have access to high-quality early learning experiences prior to kindergarten. A screening process is used to determine whether a child qualifies for the program.

Students qualify through an application and screening process. This free program is available for children who are not currently enrolled in an early learning program and demonstrate financial, academic, and/or social-emotional needs. Transition to Kindergarten will focus on essential academics, social-emotional skills, and learning habits to empower children as they launch into their academic journey.

Please note:

  • Space is limited, and completing the initial Stage 1 screening forms does not guarantee placement.
  • We are NOT accepting out-of-district waiver requests for the Transition to Kindergarten Program; students must reside within our district boundaries.
  • Students must be 4 years old by August 31 of the school year in which they would attend TK.
  • Children who are kindergarten-eligible should be registered for regular kindergarten.
