Volunteer FAQs

Call to schedule an appointment at an SHSD school to complete the process.

SHSD schools welcome community members to volunteer at schools across the district. In order for a community member to start volunteering, they must:

• Complete the Volunteer Application Form

• Complete Safe Schools Training

• Read the online Volunteer Handbook

• Be cleared by SHSD using state or national background checks

In order to get started as a volunteer with SHSD schools, you will need to:

• Complete the online application process.

• If approved, choose a school. You can find a list of schools here.

• Inquire with the school about their current volunteer opportunities.

• Ask school staff about orientation and training materials.

• Discuss and confirm your role, schedule, and expectations.

Each school has a volunteer contact person. Each school will offer different volunteer needs depending on their programs.

Here is a short list of general types of volunteers that our schools ask for:

• Academic support - tutoring during the school day, as well as in before and after school programs

• Enrichment volunteers - providing enrichment activities such as arts, drama, etc.

• Clerical/administrative volunteers-providing office or library support, supporting classroom teachers

• One-time volunteers - supporting family events, helping with building maintenance projects, guest presenters

Yes, SHSD does conduct background checks. Additionally, all assistant volunteer coaches, overnight chaperones, and extended trip volunteers will also need to complete a fingerprint background check. Contact our HR Department to schedule an appointment at shsdvolunteers@steilacoom.k12.wa.us
